Ferdinand de Lesseps made only two trips to Panama, the first in belatedly December 1879 to turn the first shovel of clay and inaugurate Culvert construction. Though the French engineers made progress, eventually excavating over 75,000,000 cubic yards of cloth, they faced insurmountable obstacles: inadequate equipment, landslides, floods, searing heat, and the ravages of malaria and yellow fever.
De Lesseps 2nd visit in 1886 was largely to restore confidence amid investors and morale among the workers. It was the simply time he actually observed the progress of construction on the canal, which he connected to insist must be a body of water-level culvert and not one that utilized a serial of locks. Talk of failure had become serious in the summertime of 1885, as investigators began to suspect that costs were higher than reported, while records of the amount of fabric excavated were largely exaggerated. In Panama, de Lesseps rode on horseback in front of auspicious crowds, reassuring the workers that all is possible with hearts and minds like theirs. Philippe Bunau-Varilla accompanied de Lesseps on his bout. One of the almost influential figures in the development of the Panama Canal, Bunau-Varilla had arrived in Panama in 1884 as a young engineer. He received an engagement as division engineer in charge of the Culebra Cut and the Pacific slope division. Inside a year, at age 27, he became acting General Managing director of the entire French effort to build the Panama Canal, at that fourth dimension the largest engineering project anywhere in the globe.
The dangerous, difficult work and insurmountable financial problems ultimately doomed the French effort to build a ocean-level canal and the investors were financially devastated when the company liquidated in 1889. Workers lost even more with an estimated 20,000 dead.

The French work forcefulness grew from a niggling over 800 laborers in the summer of 1881, to reach a maximum of 19,000 in 1884. The majority of the labor forcefulness came from the West Indies with Jamaica being the chief supplier of workers.

The French company building the Panama Canal relied heavily on subcontractors to achieve much of the piece of work. On the Atlantic side, American-built "Hercules" type dredges were operated by the American Contracting and Dredging Company of New York. This type of endless-chain-of-buckets dredge worked all along the line, with skilled labor generally from America, Ireland, and Sweden. I of the advantages of the Hercules dredge was the use of a high belfry to support a long discharge pipe. Spoil could be dumped without having to coordinate with bucket crews or railway cars, which typically acquired unavoidable delays.View in Digital Collection »
In 1903, after the collapse of the French efforts in Panama, Philippe Bunau-Varilla was appointed Plenipotentiary-Government minister by the Panamanian revolutionists, whose revolution he helped to finance and orchestrate. Before the delegation from Panama could reach Washington to negotiate a canal treaty, the Plenipotentiary-Minister Bunau-Varilla wrote one and signed it with Secretary of State John Hay on November xviii, 1903. The Hay – Bunau-Varilla Treaty was extremely advantageous to the U.s.a. and, indirectly, brought great financial profit to Bunau-Varilla. The treaty remained a source of outrage amongst Panamanians until its abrogation in 1977.

The Scotch Dredges used by the French were better adapted for deep-sea work than for attacking new banks, and were thus used both in the bay at Colón on the Atlantic side and in the Bay of Panama on the Pacific side of the canal. These excavators steamed out from Scotland, some going to Colón and the others having to pass around the Horn of South America – the road that ships would be able to avert once the Panama Canal was built. In the Bay of Panama, the Scotch Dredges encountered coral stone, which reduced their output to a fraction of the 3,000 cubic meters per day they could accomplish when digging through ordinary dirt.View in Digital Collection »
